Bear Safety & Wildlife Awareness

At Bush Pilot Hunter’s Retreat Lodge, guest safety is our absolute priority . Because we are located just 20 miles from the McNeil Wildlife Sanctuary, our area is home to massive brown bears that can exceed 10 feet in height and 1,000 lbs in weight. Respecting these animals and their habitat is essential for a safe and memorable Alaskan adventure.

The Electric Perimeter Fence

Property Protection: The entire lodge property is surrounded by an electrified bear fence for your security.

Gate Operations: All gates are also electrified; however, there is a specific 3-foot section designed for unlatching that is not electrified.

Safety Warning: Never touch the electrified portions of the fence and keep all gates closed at all times.

Essential Field Protection

Bear Spray Requirement: You must carry bear spray every time you leave the protected perimeter, whether you are fishing, boating, or taking photographs .

The “Never Forget” Rule: If you realize you have forgotten your spray or protection, stop your activity immediately and return to the lodge to retrieve it.

Firearm Recommendations: For those bringing a handgun for added protection, we recommend at least a .44 magnum revolver with 250 to 300-grain loads.

Revolver Preference: We suggest revolvers over semi-automatics as they are less likely to jam in critical situations.

Wildlife Encounter Protocols

Standard Response: If you encounter a bear at close range, back away slowly and calmly to let the bear know you are there.

Safe Retreat: If possible, return to your boat and leave the area immediately.

The “Fish Law”: If you are fighting a fish and a bear approaches, Alaska law requires you to give the fish to the bear.

No Conflict: Never fight a bear for a fish; your safety is far more valuable than the catch

🐻 How to Use Bear Spray — Watch Before You Go

Bear spray is your single most effective defense against a bear attack in the Alaskan wilderness. It is more effective than a firearm in most close-range encounters and every guest at Bush Pilot Hunter’s Retreat Lodge is strongly encouraged to carry it at all times when outside the lodge property.

Watch the video below before your arrival so you are fully prepared if you ever encounter a bear on your adventure.

Preparation & Respect

Training: Guests are encouraged to watch our instructional videos on the proper use of bear spray before arrival.

Respecting the Wild: Remember that we are visitors in the bears’ home; respecting their space is the best way to ensure a peaceful encounter.
