  • Weight Verification: If your harvest is close to the 200 lb limit, you are required to weigh all items to ensure an accurate manifest.

Storage and Packaging for Transit

  • Final Labeling: Securely attach duct tape to the outside of the duffel bag labeled with your name, address, and phone number.

  • Freezer Storage: Once labeled, place the entire duffel bag into the chest freezers to maintain the cold chain.

Trophy, Hide, and Antler Preparation

  • Hide Preservation: Hides must be skinned with no meat remaining, treated with a deep salt rub, and drip-dried for 10 hours before a second salt bath.

  • Hide Packaging: Fold the treated hide into a size no larger than 24″ x 24″, place it in a plastic bag with your contact info, and leave it at the lodge for consolidated shipping.

  • Antler Care: Cut antlers at the base of the skull and clean them thoroughly.

  • Point Protection: Tightly secure pieces of garden hose to every antler point to prevent damage during transit.

  • Antler Labeling: Place antlers in a clear, taped-shut bag with your name, address, and phone number.

How To Fillet Salmon

Filleting your salmon is simple with the right steps. Start by placing the fish on a stable surface and making a clean cut just behind the gills down to the backbone. Turn your knife and carefully run it along the spine toward the tail, keeping steady pressure to separate the fillet.

Once the fillet is removed, trim away the rib bones and any excess fat. Repeat the process on the other side. For best results, use a sharp fillet knife and take your time with smooth, controlled cuts.

After filleting, rinse the fish lightly, then vacuum-seal and freeze it to keep it fresh for your trip home.

Vacuum Seal Your Catch for the Journey Home

Once your salmon is filleted, the next step is making sure it stays fresh all the way home. At Bush Pilot Hunter’s Retreat Lodge, we use the Cabela’s Vacuum Sealer — one of the best on the market for preserving fish and game. Vacuum sealing locks in freshness, prevents freezer burn, and keeps your catch in perfect condition whether you’re flying home or shipping it ahead. Watch how it’s done.
